Bid4Build Cost Estimating Software Review

Duane Craig was typical on-site superintendent with typical problems. "At a remote location I was often tasked with providing estimates relative to changes in work, and to add detail to the larger project estimate," he recalled. "For example, at one point we uncovered hidden water and insect damage to a portion of a building. I had to estimate the costs to repair so we would have a baseline to go from when soliciting bids from sub-contractors. At other times, I needed to estimate specific portions of the work so we could provide more depth to the budget."

He began using the construction cost estimating tool Bid4Build for the renovation to a 100-unit apartment project. The software cost $263, and the benefits were immediate.

"I remember part of the project called for storage areas to be built attached to the buildings. On the very first building we discovered the project had been built on a field of rubble. At one point we unearthed a rock the size of a Volkswagen," Craig remembered. "The digging was so difficult and expensive that cost over-runs were going to be huge. I needed to prepare a report that showed what it would cost to continue. Having [Bid4Build] made that task a whole lot quicker and simpler than if I would have had to go to a spreadsheet solution and pull costs from a book. For that one project, I believe we saved close to 60 hours of my time alone, plus we were able to better sort out bids for various parts of the job much more quickly and accurately."

He continued: "I needed a [construction cost] estimating product that included a database suitable for multi-family work, that didn't include a lot of cost associated with maintaining it, and that was straightforward and quick to get up to speed on. I looked at other tools, and had used one that was considerably more expensive when I was doing owner/builder consulting before this job. The power, flexibility, and price of Bid4Build made it the best value matched to my needs at the time."

Craig feels that the best features are the "customization tools, the ease of use, and the support." As an example, "I needed help updating my cost book. Support called me back even though it was near the end of the day and stayed on it until my changes were done. Then they followed up with me later that week." The documentation is also very good.

There haven't been any serious problems, and, for Craig, there aren't any major changes he would make with Bid4Build. He definitely recommends the software for residential, multi-family, and light commercial contractors, estimators, architects and designers. Craig suggests that those who want to get started quickly with this construction cost estimating tool should be familiar with databases, spreadsheets and word processing.

Due to its low cost, ease of use and good support, Craig would rate Bid4Build a "solid 10" out of 10.

For example at one point we uncovered hidden water and insect damage to a portion of a building. At other times I needed to estimate specific portions of the work so we could provide more depth to the budget.
